Meta Newhouse is the Founding Director, The Design Sandbox for Engaged Learning (DSEL) and Professor of Graphic Design, Montana State University

Meta Newhouse is an award-winning creative director, graphic designer, and filmmaker with 30 years of experience in the visual communication industry. She has worked for clients such as The American Heart Association, Dallas County Community Colleges, FedEx/Kinkos, GTE/Verizon, Motorola, and the Susan G. Komen Foundation. Meta has been a design educator since 1995 and currently is the Founding Director of the DSEL (Design Sandbox for Engaged Learning) at Montana State University. Her work for DSEL won Core77’s national Design Education Initiative Award in 2017 — an award that has also been won by Stanford’s dSchool and the global design firm, IDEO. She is passionate about typography, social communication, design thinking, and design entrepreneurship. In January 2017, she had one of her posters about climate change added to the permanent collections of the V&A Museum (London); Les Arts Decoratifs de Paris; Moti (The Netherlands); the Lahti Poster Museum (Finland) and Designmuseum Danmark. Her type-based research has led to presentations at ATypI (Helsinki, Reykjavik, Barcelona), TypeCon (Denver, Boston) and FaceForward (Dublin). She loves teaching students how to use type to communicate their ideas, as well as slightly more subversive ways to communicate such as guerrilla advertising.
